One stone, five ways

Everything we sell comes out of the same sandstone. Some of it leaves as it was lifted, as walling, rockery and boulders. The rest goes through the crusher and screens and leaves as graded stone for sub-base, drainage, bedding and fill.

Random buff sandstone walling stones stacked on a pallet, flat beds and natural split faces, gorse and birch scrub softly behind.
Random walling · Split along the bed, so it sits true in a wall.

Walling and building stone

Random walling, squared building stone and copes for walls that last.

CoversRandom walling stone · Squared building stone · Copes and through-stones

Four weathered buff sandstone rockery pieces on rough grass, rounded edges, bedding lines, iron staining and a little moss, hedge softly behind.

Rockery and landscape stone

Weathered-looking pieces for rockeries, banks and borders.

Boulders and large blocks

Single feature stones and blocks for retaining and edging.

One large buff sandstone feature boulder on a gravel yard, a strong weathered face with faint bedding, trees softly behind.
Feature boulder · Placed by machine, turned to show its best face.
Close-up of clean crushed buff and honey sandstone in thumb-sized angular pieces, fine sand grain and faint lamination visible, a little iron staining, no fines.
Clean stone, small · No fines, so water runs straight through.
Close-up of crushed buff sandstone sub-base with a full mix of sizes from dust to coarse angular pieces, fines packed between the stones.

Crushed sandstone aggregates

Screened sizes from fine dust to gabion stone.

Sub-base and fill

Crushed sub-base, scalpings and fill for tracks, bases and levels.

Sandstone is lifted from the face in beds. The best blocks are set aside; the rest is crushed, screened and stockpiled.

How the stone is made ready

Extracted, crushed, screened, stockpiled

Sandstone is lifted from the face in beds. The best blocks are set aside for walling, rockery and boulders. The rest is fed through a crusher and over screens, which sort it into sizes. Each size goes to its own stockpile, ready to load.

A small tracked excavator working a low bench of a buff sandstone face, bucket levering a bedded slab free, clean floor.
Extract · The face is worked in steps, which keeps it stable and safe.

Extract

The face is worked bed by bed, so the stone comes out in usable pieces.

Crush

Stone that isn't kept whole is broken down in the crusher.

Elevated view looking down onto a plain off-white tracked jaw crusher, its hopper full of broken buff sandstone and its outlet conveyor dropping crushed stone onto a pile, overcast light.
Crush · Stone not kept whole is broken down here.
A straight row of crushed sandstone stockpiles in clearly different sizes between concrete block bay walls, seen from the end so they recede toward a low sandstone face, overcast light.
Close view into the vibrating screen deck of a mobile screener: crushed buff sandstone bouncing across steel mesh, smaller pieces dropping through, motion blur in the stone, raking light.
Screen · Each mesh takes out one size, from dust to gabion stone.

Screen

The screens sort crushed stone into sizes, from dust to gabion stone.

Stockpile

Each size is kept apart, so what you order is what you get.

Stone in use

The jobs our stone is made for

Walls on farms, paths in village gardens, sub-base on a self-build plot. These are the kinds of job we're getting ready to supply across Lancashire.

Restoration · The plan: soils kept at the start go back on at the end.

The site and the land

Worked with care, put back with care

A quarry has neighbours, footpaths, hedges and trees around it. We intend to work to the conditions set for the site, keep the roads clean, and restore worked ground as we go, so the land ends up useful and green again.

A dense belt of mature mixed woodland in full leaf seen across a meadow, fully screening what lies behind, calm summer light.
Existing trees to be kept as screening and habitat.
