Rolling green Lancashire farmland with hedgerows and a belt of mature mixed woodland, a small quarry only hinted at by a pale sandstone edge glimpsed through the trees, a footpath stile in the foreground hedge, soft hazy morning light.

The site and the land

A quarry is a guest in the landscape

Our stone comes out of Lancashire ground, and that ground has neighbours, footpaths, hedges, trees and wildlife around it. This is how we intend to look after all of them.

Green pasture with a hedge and a single oak, a thin pale sandstone edge with birch scrub just visible beyond the hedge line, soft afternoon light.

Working to the rules, and past them where we can

We intend to work to the conditions set for the site: the hours, the routes, the limits on noise and dust. Where we can do better than the minimum, we want to.

Fine water mist sprays over a crusher discharge conveyor on a sandstone quarry floor, droplets catching the light, dark damp stone below, calm and controlled.
The aim of the sprays: dust stays on the stone, not on the neighbours.

Keep the roads clean.

Lorries will go through a wheel wash before they leave, and loads will be sheeted.

A sheeted plain grey tipper lorry leaving a quarry along a clean, swept tarmac access track between hedges, wet road with no mud, soft morning light, seen from behind.
Our aim: every lorry leaves clean and sheeted.

Keep the dust down.

Haul roads and stockpiles will be damped in dry weather, and the crusher and screens will run with water sprays.

Keep the noise down.

Plant will work behind screening banks and trees, and only within the working hours set for the site.

A wooden stile and plain waymarker post in a hedge, a public footpath across a field, a neat post-and-rail fence beyond separating the path from a working area.
Our aim: public paths kept open, fenced safely from the working area.

Keep paths open and safe.

Public paths will stay open, with clear fencing and signs between walkers and machines.

Keep the trees and hedges.

Existing woodland and hedgerows will be kept and looked after as screening and habitat.

High oblique aerial of a small sandstone quarry in farmland: one compact working area with a buff face and stockpiles, a reshaped area beside it and a green area planted with rows of young trees, woodland and hedged fields all round.
The plan: worked in phases, with only a small part open at once.

Worked a bit at a time

We intend to work the quarry in phases. Only a small part of the site would be open at once, and each phase would be restored as the next begins, so the worked area never spreads across the whole site.

Putting the land back

When a phase is finished, the plan is to reshape the ground, put back the soils kept at the start, and plant the land. Our aim is grassland, native woodland and wet corners for wildlife, joined up with the fields and trees around it.

Top-down aerial of a restored former quarry area: grassland, young tree planting in rows and a small pond, a narrow worked area at one edge.
The plan: each phase restored as the next begins.
A gentle restored grassland slope below a low weathered sandstone edge, wildflowers in the sward, young trees at the margin, summer light.
Restoration · The plan: soils kept at the start go back on at the end.
Rows of young native tree whips in pale guards planted on a grassed slope running up to a low weathered sandstone edge, bright overcast day.
Restoration · Native trees, joined up with the woods around.
A newly planted double hedgerow of young hawthorn and hazel in guards along a field edge on restored pasture, fresh soil, distant fields.
A shallow pond with reed and rush margins and a small island in a restored hollow, a low grassed sandstone edge behind with gorse and birch, still water reflecting the sky.
Restoration · Wet corners left for wildlife.

Keeping the story in the stone

A quarry face shows how the ground was laid down, bed by bed. Where a worked face shows something worth seeing, we intend to leave part of it exposed rather than bury it, and let it green over at the edges.

An old worked sandstone face left exposed, bedding clearly visible, birch saplings and grasses colonising the ledges and foot, soft light.
Our aim: part of a worked face left open to show how the ground was laid down.
A quiet country track between tall hawthorn hedgerows in spring blossom, grass centre strip, soft morning light.
